I should add that I used the word "legend" and not "myth." Myth implies pure fiction. Legend is often fact mixed with fiction. But even when we cannot sort out fact from fiction, legends still tell us a great deal about the people involved. The kinds of legends told about Richard Nixon are very different than the kinds told about the Chofetz Chaim.

Very simply stated, Bernard Lewis' thesis is that when the Islamic world is on top, they are less fanatical. Now they perceive themselves as losers, so they have swung toward the fanatic side and are fighting back. It's a terrible, vicious cycle.

Might it be that because Rashi had two women assisting him, they are partly responsible for his ability to reach the youngest of Jews, maternal instinct and all that?

Dear Rabbi Wein, I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to the study of history these days and VERY much appreciate your blog posts because they are of an easily digestible size, yet packed with important information I wouldn't otherwise have learned. Thank you!

Nothing to indicate that Islam will ever go back to its brief tolerant phase from 1000 years ago.

"the total number of books translated into Arabic yearly is no more than 330, or one-fifth of those translated in a small country like Greece" - http://www.worldpress.org/Mideast/663.cfm

I'll take a West that's capable of a reformation. In Islam, there is no leftwing Imam who could refute that there are but 3 outcomes for us in Dar al Harb: conversion to Islam, subjugation as dhimmis, or death.

Mishlei (Proverbs) notes that those who love death hate G-d. No religion other than the so-called "Religion of Peace" so brazenly brags about loving death, from the highest Ayatollah to the lowest lay-Muslim.

The ‘myth’ of Nathan selling off then buying at the bottom weren’t stocks they were consols aka bonds. Which they (The Rothschild family) created. There’s the authorized biography by Niall Ferguson that puts the Rothschild’s wealth into the trillions, and too boot none of their estate were bombed during WW2 NONE of them.
